Akon Mail Zim Fans Excited Hails Continent: R&B superstar Akon has said there have been a lot of misconceptions about Africa in many parts of the world. The American singer, who jetted into Harare on Thursday afternoon for a show yesterday alongside dancehall maestro Sean Paul, told journalists that the continent had often been projected as underdeveloped and backward.

“I think there have been a lot of misconceptions, too, in a lot of places in Africa. But when you land in these places you never really see what they are talking about,” he said at a press briefing.

“You never get to see the misconceptions that are as far as the place being underdeveloped.”

He said, as he arrived in central Harare, he struggled to see the bad things that had been said about Zimbabwe in the Western world.

“As far as I can see Zimbabwe is a beautiful place and I haven’t seen anything that contradicted the positive things that I have heard before,” he said.
Akon said African people were mostly the same everywhere, despite their situations.

Akon Ignore Your Plane: Akon was expected to visit Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the country’s top tourism spot.

His visit was also expected to lift the profile of the World Heritage Site as a safe tourist destination.

A member of his entourage supposed to have travelled with Akon to Victoria Falls told NewsDay said Akon failed to wake up on time, and was still sleeping at the time of departure, despite having been booked for the flight.

The plane was supposed to leave the Harare International Airport at 0830am but Akon, famed for guzzling large amounts of Hennessey (expensive American liquor), could not make it on time.

“We were already on the plane waiting when we were told to get off the plane as Akon had failed to wake up in time for the flight. So we got off and the plane proceeded with some tourists and other passengers who were going to Victoria Falls,” said the entourage member.

Akon In Zimbabwe With Our Friends: AMERICAN R&B star Akon revealed he dreamed of visiting Zimbabwe “for a long, long time” as he arrived in Harare on Thursday for a weekend gig alongside Jamaican reggae star Sean Paul.

Moved by an “incredible” and “overwhelming” welcome by adoring fans, the Lonely star who was born in Senegal declared Zimbabwe his second home. He told a press conference: “I was overwhelmingly received by the crowds as we drove around. We are very excited. This is an incredible moment for us. We have been trying to get to Zimbabwe for a long, long time. We always end up bumping heads with unreal promoters.

Akon Perform In India: We already told you that hip-hop superstar Akon came to Mumbai earlier this year to work on the soundtrack of Shahrukh Khan's and Kareena Kapoor's new movie Ra.One, and now DH! can reveal that the "Sexy Chick" singer will sing in Hindi! Akon Adds A Wife? Akon, who allegedly has three wives and six children, may be adding to his Big Love lifestyle. The singer was recently spotted with a former stripper named Unique who is now allegedly his fourth wife. The woman, who was spotted wearing a wedding ring, has told friends in Atlanta that she is married to the singer.

Akon only has one wife legally and she is Tomeka. The singer has tried to keep his family life out of the public eye over the years.

In related news, Akon was just hit with a lawsuit by Lofraco Belgium, a promotional company who booked the singer for a show last October. The singer pulled out just eight days before the scheduled show and was paid $125,000.

Akon - Harare date for Sean Paul: JAMAICAN dancehall superstar Sean Paul and Senegal-born R&B sensation Akon are set to share the stage in Harare early next month in one of the biggest international concerts to be held in the country.  The show – set for the National Sports Stadium on September 4 - is being promoted by a group of Zimbabwean businessmen and the state tourism agency, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).

Akon, who is based in the United States, rose to prominence in 2004 and has since become one of the World’s most successful and versatile R&B artists while Sean Paul equally dominates dancehall music. A representative of the businessmen, Tendai Mufurutsa, said the gig was part of efforts to market the country as a safe destination.

Akon Blocked Performing In A Concert: Organisers of the Akon Live in Concert scheduled for  early next month in Harare are panicking on whether the show will go on owing to the Zimbabwean immigration laws which prescribe that someone who was once convicted of.

A specified crime, regardless of where this was, is prohibited from entering the country.  Akon, real name Alliuane Badara Thiam, spent five years in prison and was at some point arraigned in the town of Fishkill Court on charges of endangering the welfare of a minor in 2007.

Akon Out Of Speaks: He posted his confirmation on Facebook. The multiple award-winning star, scheduled to perform at the National Sports Stadium on September 4, said through a wall posting: “Harare, Zimbabwe I am playing Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at the Harare Soccer Stadium (National Sports Stadium)!”

His official website (akon.com) was also updated yesterday to confirm the highly-anticipated show. “We know most people could not believe that we are bringing Akon to Zimbabwe and they have feared that he would not turn up after all but that Facebook wall post is evidence enough to prove that he is coming to Zimbabwe and he wants the whole world to know,” ZimSwag director Alex Goho said Tuesday.

“With that said, we would like to invite the corporates and even individuals to come on board and support us in our endeavour to bring Akon and Sean Paul to Zimbabwe.”

Akon’s official facebook page had 5 377 856 fans worldwide as of yesterday.

Thousands of people had also posted their comments in response to Akon’s confirmation.

“Zvimwe tingapotse asi kwaAkon hatisare ah (we could miss out on other things but not Akon’s show,)” read a comment by a Zimbabwean fan.
